Superman's Doomsday

Since childhood I was a big fan of comic books. Superheroes were a favourite, along with the regular light ones like Archie and the lot.
I never got to read much of the DC or Marvel superhero comics, and my life was the poorer for it. On the rare occasions when I could lay my hand on these, I would absolutely devour them in spellbound fascination.
My thirst for the heroic capers of these costumed heroes resurfaced when recently an Indian firm started publishing Marvel and DC comics in India and at prices that didn't bankrupt a good man doing an honest days work. Needless to say, I splashed out on my favourites and suddenly had stacks of comics piled up all over my room.
Anyway... on with the crux of the discussion... one of the comics was Superman's fight against Doomsday. I had missed out the comic about the original death of Superman... and only came to know about the details in this comic. Superman was apparently resurrected with some enhancements in his powers. But he's having nightmares about the unstoppable force which killed him, and which he apparently killed. I was quite fascinated by the whole idea of Superman's nemesis. I mean, after all, it's Superman ffs! If Superman can't fight it, what force in the universe can? And we're not talking about a Superman weakened by Kryptonite, but just a normal Superman in his full strength!
So who or what is this Doomsday who Superman died killing? Doomsday is apparently a humanoid behemoth with bony spikes/protrusions on it's face, elbows, knees etc. And it is incredibly resilient and strong. And what's more, it can't be killed. Everytime it dies, apparently it reawakens after having adapted to the element that killed it and therefore being immune to it.
This comic talked about the origins of Doomsday - how it was created and briefly about how it killed Superman (through Superman's recurrent nightmares).
And in this book, Doomsday re-awakens and is somehow transported to Apokolips. There he commences to destroy that world, as he has destroyed so many entire worlds before.
Even the all powerful Darkseid and his all consuming Omega rays are powerless against the beast. It sent a thrill up my spine to see Darkseid cast aside like a rag doll by an unstoppable force. Doomsday's creator would have been so proud of his creation! That is of course, if Doomsday hadn't killed him first :)
So how does Superman overcome this unstoppable force of creation? Not without a little help from his friends of course.
Some chap who has the power to travel through time comes to the rescue... he transports the beast to the end of time, when the universe is imploding and atrophy is consuming everything. So it turns out that the unstoppable force Doomsday met it's match in the even more unstoppable force of nature - atrophy.
Such an intelligent solution to an impossible problem!
This book is definitely one of my alltime favourite stories as a result.
